Never been? It's more relaxed than you're picturing. Here's the honest, start-to-finish walkthrough so you can show up at our Oconomowoc spa knowing exactly how it goes.

Book a Massage

The first massage is the one people get nervous about — the booking, the undressing, the "am I supposed to talk?" of it all. Honestly, none of it is as awkward as your head is making it. Here's the whole thing, plainly, so the only surprise is how fast the hour goes.

I Before you arrive

Booking, timing, and what to wear

A few small things that make the first visit smooth.

Book online through our scheduling page (or call us) and pick a length — if you're unsure, a 60-minute session is the easy first choice; our guide to massage length walks through the rest. Try to arrive about ten minutes early. There's a short, low-key intake — what's sore, what to avoid, how much pressure you like.

Wear whatever's comfortable to get here; you'll change in private. You undress to your own comfort level — many people go down to underwear, some keep more on, and that's all fine. You're under a sheet the entire time, and your therapist only uncovers the one area being worked on. Nothing else is exposed.

II On the table

What actually happens during the hour

Covered, warm, and entirely at your pace.

Once you're settled face-down under the sheet, your therapist starts with the areas you flagged and works at the pressure you asked for. Talking is optional — some people chat, most drift off, and falling asleep is basically a compliment. The room is warm and quiet, usually with low music.

The single most useful thing to know: you're in charge of the dial. Too firm, too light, too cold, ticklish spot you'd rather skip — just say so, anytime. A good therapist would much rather you spoke up than gritted your teeth through it. When time's up, you'll have a few minutes to get up slowly and have some water.

You're under a sheet the whole time, and you set the pressure. Speak up — that's the etiquette. — The only two things first-timers really need
Honest limits

A couple of honest notes

What a massage visit is — and isn't.

Your massage therapist isn't a doctor and won't diagnose or treat a medical condition. A massage is relaxation and tension relief — lovely for a stiff neck or a stressful week, but if you have pain that keeps returning, an injury, or a health concern, see a doctor or physical therapist first. Let us know about anything relevant (recent surgery, pregnancy, skin issues) when you book so we can adjust or reschedule.

And there's no upsell here. You won't be talked into a membership or pressured to rebook — come back when it suits you.

Frequently asked

Do I have to take all my clothes off? +

No — you undress only to your comfort level, in private, and you stay covered by a sheet the whole time. Your therapist only uncovers the area they're actively working on. Plenty of people keep their underwear on.

Am I supposed to talk during the massage? +

Entirely up to you. Some people like to chat, most go quiet, and many fall asleep. The only thing worth speaking up about is pressure, temperature, or a spot you'd rather we skip.

Will it hurt? +

It shouldn't be sharp. Firm work can feel like a 'good ache,' but you set the pressure — tell us to ease off any time and we will.

How early should I arrive, and is tipping expected? +

Arrive about ten minutes early for a quick intake. Tipping is appreciated but never required or expected — no pressure either way.

What if I'm self-conscious or ticklish? +

Completely normal, and your therapist has seen it all. You're draped the whole time, and if a spot is ticklish we'll work around it or adjust the pressure. Just mention it.
